Men’s Soccer Blanks Butler 3-0

Bloomington, IN – Nationally-ranked Clemson used a relentless attack to hand Butler a 3-0 setback in the first round of the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic in Bloomington, Ind., on Friday, August 30. The shutout loss spoiled Butler’s season opener.

Clemson, boasting a “Top 25” national ranking, peppered the Bulldogs’ defense with 18 shots in the match. Dimelon Westfield broke a scoreless tie with a goal at 32:40. Westfield found the net from five yards out off an assist from Fabio Tambosi. The goal proved to be the game-winner.

Andre Borges added a goal for the Tigers at 43:42 and Nick Rivera closed the scoring with a second-half goal at 66:37. Chase Hilgenbrinck picked up an assist on the first goal, while Paul Souders had an assist on the final tally.

Butler countered with 11 shots, including three by senior Michael Mariscalco , but Clemson goalkeeper Doug Warren turned away every shot on goal. Warren recorded five saves, while picking up the shutout victory. Grant Barrie went the distance in goal for the Bulldogs and recorded six saves.

The Bulldogs will meet Rutgers in the final round of the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic on Saturday, August 31.
