Clemson won its first ACC game of the year last Tuesday, a53-48 victory over a Florida State team that was 12-2 entering thegame. Clemson’s defense held the Seminoles to 37 percent shooting,including 30 percent from three-point range. The Seminoles enteredthe game shooting an ACC best 41 percent from three-point land.Clemson held Florida State to 48 points for the game, the bestscoring defense by a Tiger team in an ACC game since a 59-42 winover NC State on 1-27-00. Vernon Hamilton was a sparkplug for theTigers on defense with five steals, including three inside the last9:24 of the game. Hamilton now has 33 steals for the year, morethan twice as many as any other Tiger. Half way through the season,Hamilton is on pace to break Greg Buckner’s freshman steal recordof 63 set in 1994-95. Clemson had a positive turnover margin in thewin over Florida State, forcing 20 Seminole miscues against 18committed by the Tigers. It broke a 9- game streak in which Clemsonhad committed more turnovers than the opposition. Chris Hobbs has620 rebounds entering the NC State game in Raleigh. He needs justnine rebounds to move ahead of Vincent Hamilton into 14th place onthe all-time Clemson list. Hobbs, a native of Clemson’s careerfield goal percentage list (542). Clemson still has not allowed ateam to shoot 50 percent from the field this year. Only three teamshave exceeded 46 percent from the field against Clemson this yearand all three of those teams (Cincinnati, Duke and Wake Forest) areranked in the top 10 in the nation. Clemson is shooting .459 fromthe field so far this year. If the season ended today that would beClemson’s best field goal percentage over a season since the1998-99 team also shot .459 from the field. Clemson’s field goalpercentage defense of .410 is on pace to be the second best by aTiger team since the 1989-90 ACC Championship team. Clemson will bemaking its fifth appearace at the RBC Center. The Tigers won intheir first appearance there, 66-63 in the 1999-00 season. Clemsonhas lost three straight in the facility by 85 points. Clemson’sJanuary 25 game with Maryland has been moved from 8:00 PM to 6:30PM start. The game will be televised nationally by Fox Sports Net.Clemson’s January 31 contest with North Carolina at LittlejohnColiseum is sold out. NC State head coach Herb Sendek will belooking for his 200th career victory as a head coach when theTigers face NC State on Saturday.
