McBride, Smith Honored by ACC

CLEMSON, S.C. — A pair of Clemson track & field athletes were honored for their performances this past weekend, the Atlantic Coast Conference announced Tuesday. Chris McBride was named ACC Men’s Field Performer of the Week, while freshman Rebekah Smith took home the season’s first Women’s Track Performer of the Week honor.

McBride broke the Clemson long jump record that had stood for over 10 years, eclipsing former Olympian George Kitchens’ previous best. McBride leapt 25-5.25 and placed second overall as Clemson debuted its new Mondo indoor track surface. McBride’s jump was a personal collegiate best and is the No. 2 mark in the country this season.

Smith was impressive in her debut. The Irmo High School standout and former South Carolina state champion raced to a winning time of 7.33 in the 60-meter dash. Smith’s time ranks sixth in Clemson history. She also placed third in the 200.
