LSU Defeats Clemson, 5-2

BATON ROUGE, LA – Louisiana State defeated Clemson 5-2 in a men’s intercollegiate tennis match at Baton Rouge, LA Thursday. LSU improves to 3-1 overall while Clemson falls to 1-2 this season. LSU is ranked 32nd, while the Tigers are ranked 70th.

LSU won the doubles point to start the match. On court one, #28 Olivier Borsos and Chris Simpson looked to be in trouble, falling behind 5-1 to Clemson’s Yannick Maden and Zachary Rigsby. However, the pair came back to win seven straight games as they posted an 8-5 victory.

In singles, Clemson (1-2) kept things interesting for LSU.

James Turbervill put LSU ahead 2-0 and was the first to finish on court six, defeating Rigsby 6-1, 6-3.

Neal Skupski defeated Gerardo Meza at number-two singles in straight sets 6-4, 6-0 to give LSU a 3-0 advantage when the tables began to turn.

At number-one singles, Clemson’s #59-ranked Yannick Maden defeated #68 Olivier Borsos in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 to make the score 3-1 in LSU’s favor.

Clemson narrowed the lead to 3-2 when Dominique Maden defeated Chris Simpson 6-1, 0-6, 6-2 at number-three singles.

With the match on the line, Tom Knights won 6-4, 6-4 over Cedric Willems on court four to clinch the victory for LSU.

On court five, LSU’s Stefan Szacinski won two tiebreakers, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4), against Hunter Harrington to make the final score 5-2 in LSU’s favor.

Clemson will play at Louisville on Saturday, February 11, in the Tigers’ next action.
