PACIFIC PALISADES, CA – Sophomores Monika Kochanova and Klara Vyskocilova of the Clemson women’s tennis team knocked off the top seed in the prequalification rounds on Sunday to advance to the Qualifying draw. They have gone 3-0 so far as a tandem out at the Riviera/ ITA All-American Championships at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, CA.

Thirty-two doubles teams nationally earn a spot in the prequalification round, and play for one of four spots in the 32-team qualifying round. Then, those in the qualifying round play for one of four spots in the 24-team Main Draw. Clemson’s Josipa Bek and Keri Wong, ranked No.1 in the nation, earned an automatic bid into the main draw. The duo also advanced to the finals of this tournament a year ago.

Kochanova and Vyskocilova teams up to beat Fleming and Ray of UCLA, 8-4 on Saturday, setting up a match on Sunday with Cal Poly’s Lee and Cornea, which Clemson won by an 8-4 margin. That set up a showdown with the top seeded duo of Gaytan-Scott and Leach of Texas. The Tiger duo got up early, and cruised to an 8-1 win, earning them a spot in the Qualifying doubles round, which starts Tuesday.

Both sophomores also participated in prequalifying singles play, but were knocked out in the first round on Saturday. Vyskocilova fell to Stefanie Weinstein of Nebraska, 7-6(4), 6-4. Kochanova dropped her matchup with Misia Krawoski of Brown, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Wong will participate in Qualifying singles action on Tuesday as well, and Bek has a spot in the Main Draw for singles, which starts Friday.
