John Boetsch Named Head Coach

CLEMSON, S.C. – John Boetsch (pronounced BAYtch) has been named the ninth head coach in Clemson men’s tennis program history. Boetsch, who played for the Tigers in 2003 and 2004, has served as an assistant coach for the program for eight years, including the last three seasons as Associate Head Coach. Chuck McCuen, who was the Tigers’ head coach for the past eight seasons and an assistant coach for six years before that, will remain with the program as the Director of Tennis Operations.

“John is a passionate and energetic coach who is committed to developing student-athletes both on and off the tennis court,” said Director of Athletics Dan Radakovich. “The relationships he has built and the respect he has earned during his previous eight seasons as an assistant will continue to grow and enable him to thrive as the program’s head coach. We’re excited that he and his family will continue to be a part of our Clemson Family.”

Boetsch was named the ITA Carolina Region Assistant Coach of the Year in 2014, after helping lead the Tigers to a 21-9 record, the program’s first 20-win season since 2007. Also during Boetsch’s tenure on the staff, Clemson returned to the NCAA Tournament, advancing to the second round of the national tournament in back-to-back seasons in 2013 and 2014. It was the program’s first berth in the NCAA Tournament since 2007.

In addition to serving his first five seasons as an assistant coach and the past three as Associate Head Coach, Boetsch has also been the Tigers’ recruiting coordinator for the past eight years. He recruited three players that earned a combined four All-America honors in 2013 and 2014, Hunter Harrington, Yannick Maden and Dominique Maden. In addition, Boetsch coached Harrington and Dominique Maden to the semifinals of the NCAA Doubles Championships in 2014.

Boetsch also played a primary role in the recruitment of Alex Favrot, a native of Lyon, France who arrived in Clemson in the fall of 2015 after a highly-decorated junior career. As a freshman in the spring of 2016, Favrot led the Tigers with a team-best 16-9 dual-match record, playing all but three matches at No. 1 singles.

Prior to his arrival in Tigertown in 2008, Boetsch spent one season as an assistant coach at Louisville. He has also worked as a staff professional at the Charlotte Tennis Academy, an assistant professional at the Barclay Downs Swim and Racquet Club and the head tennis professional at the Palmetto Tennis Center.

The native of Fort Mill, S.C. played for the Tigers in 2003 and 2004 after spending the first two years of his college career at Erskine College. At Clemson, Boetsch garnered First Team All-ACC honors as a junior in 2003, and helped lead the Tigers to the NCAA Quarterfinals his senior season in 2004.

Boetsch earned a bachelor’s degree in Marketing from Clemson in 2004, and a master’s degree in Youth Development Leadership from Clemson in 2011. He received his USPTR professional certification in 2006.

Boetsch and his wife, Catherine, were married in January of 2006. The couple has three children, Anderson (9), Jane (4) and Emily (1).
