Hewson Wins Clemson Invitational, Tigers Finish Third

SUNSET, S.C.— Alice Hewson picked up her third tournament win to lead Clemson to a third-place finish in the Clemson Invitational at The Reserve at Lake Keowee on Sunday. Hewson finished with a score of 206, ten-under par on the par 72 course.

Seventh ranked Furman won the event with an 834 score, 30-strokes under par. Michigan State was second at 20-under 844, two shots ahead of Clemson and 18 shots in front of Vanderbilt. Ohio State was fifth shooting an even par at 864.

This is the first tournament Hewson has won since her freshman year when she won two tournaments’ back-to-back at the start of the season. The All-ACC player played the last four holes at three-under par to finish with a round of 67, four-under, on Sunday. The junior, ranked No. 48 nationally, finished with five birdies, four coming on the back nine.

Sydney Legacy finished the final round with a 73, giving her a 209 (-7), tying her for fourth overall. The senior played her best tournament this weekend, shooting two consecutive rounds of 68 on Friday and Saturday for her lowest career rounds, becoming Clemson’s first women to shoot a 68 or under in the first two rounds of a tournament. The 209 also marks Legacy’s lowest tournament score in her career.

Ana Paula Valdes also had a 73 on Sunday, finishing tied for 25th with a combined score of 217 (+1). Kennedy Swann and Marisa Messana both made the turn at nine three over par. Swann finished the round with a 74, while Messana made par on the back nine to finish at a 75 on the day. Swann’s three round total was 219 (+3) and Messana finished with a 226 (+10).

Ashley Czarnecki and Callista Rice played the event as individuals. Rice shot two over par (74) on Sunday, finishing at 222 while Czarnecki shot four over par (78) for a three-day total of 225.
