Hewson Opens Play at Curtis Cup Friday

Clemson, S.C.—Clemson All-American Alice Hewson will compete for the Great Britain and Ireland team in the Curtis Cup this weekend at Quaker Ridge Golf Club in Scarsdale, NY. The competition between the best amateurs from GBI and the United States will take place over three days, June 8-10.

Hewson has been selected to the team for a second straight time in the biennial event.  The three-time All-ACC golfer helped the GBI team to an 11.5-8.5 victory in 2016. The United States leads the event 28-8-3.

Hewson holds 40 Clemson records through her junior year that has included playing in 33 tournaments and 96 rounds. Her score has counted towards Clemson’s team score in 95 of the 96.   She holds the Clemson season scoring average record of 72.10 set this year and the career record of 72.63. She has 14 career top 10s, including three victories, and has 15 rounds in the 60s. Her 301 career birdies are also a Clemson record.

This past year Hewson finished 41st in the Golfstat computer rankings and 45th according to Golfweek. She was 15th in the nation in par four scoring, 29th in stroke average and 33rd in scoring average vs. par. She was 34th in the nation in total birdies with 102.

Ashlan Ramsey is the only other Clemson women’s golfer to play in the Curtis Cup. She played for the United States in 2014.

All three days of the Curtis Cup will be shown on FSI. The television schedule begins Friday with 4-Ball competition from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m..   From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. the Foursomes competition will be shown.   The same schedule will be repeated on Saturday.   Sunday’s broadcast window is from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. when all eight singles matches will be shown.

The Quaker Ridge Golf course is playing host to the Curtis Cup for the third time. The par 70 course is 100 years old this year.
