Gumulya, Rompies Still Alive at ITA Carolina Regional Championships

CHAPEL HILL, NC – Beatrice Gumulya and Jessy Rompies have advanced to Monday’s semifinal round of the 2013 ITA Carolina Regional Doubles Championships in Chapel Hill, NC. The Tigers sent three players to the singles quarterfinals as well, including semifinal appearances from Gumulya and junior Yana Koroleva. Sophomore Tristen Dewar also had an impressive run to the quarters, knocking off two seeded and nationally ranked players on her path.  Dewar’s second-round 7-6, 6-4 upset of No. 24 Hanna Mar of Duke, the fourth overall seed in the singles draw, highlighted her run. She then went on to knock off No. 92 Tessa Lyons of North Carolina before ultimately falling to her teammate, Gumulya, in the quarterfinals. Gumulya, ranked 34th in the nation, cruised through her first two matches before surviving an upset scare from Kate Gardiner of Wake Forest in the Round of 16. Gumulya’s 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 win over Gardiner set up her matchup with Dewar, which she won, 7-5, 6-3.   She then fell to Hayley Carter of North Carolina, 6-2, 6-1, in the semifinals. Carter is the No. 2 overall player in the 2013 recruiting class and No. 2 seeded player in the draw.  Clemson’s top-ranked player, Yana Koroleva, earned the No. 3 overall seed in the draw by virtue of her No. 7 national ranking. An All-American last season, Koroleva took down Margaret Boyette (Furman), Andrea Retolaza (Wake Forest), and Elixane Lechemia (South Carolina) on her way to the quarterfinals. There, she took down Duke’s Marianne Jodoin, 6-3, 6-0, to set her spot in the semifinals.  In a loaded field, Clemson was the only school to place two singles players in the semifinals. Koroleva fell 7-5, 6-0 to Beatrice Capra, a tremendous player from Duke. Capra ascended to No. 1 in the nation as a freshman in 2011-12, but did not play in the 2012-13 year.  Meanwhile, Gumulya and Rompies continue to impress in their first action as a collegiate doubles duo. They have played together for years in their home country of Indonesia, winning ITF tournaments together, but have not before represented the orange and white.  They won all three of their matches after receiving a first round bye with the No. 3 seed, and await UNC’s Carter and ITA All-America winner Jamie Loeb in the semifinals at 10:00 am Monday.  Dewar and Koroleva also advanced to the quarters, but were defeated by Laura Slater and Kate Vialle of North Carolina.  Full Results: Singles Q-R32: Melis Tanek (ECU) def.
