Gordon, Lewis Place First at Auburn Saturday

AUBURN, Ala. – In his first open 800m outdoor race sine the 2017 NCAA Division I Track & Field Championships, Clemson junior John Lewis placed first in the event at Auburn’s Tiger Track Classic Friday. Lewis ran in 1:49.65 to gather his second career 800m win outdoors. Additionally, senior Deron Gordon took the men’s 400m hurdles with a time of 51.50 seconds. Additionally, senior Jeremiah Green posted the program record in the men’s triple jump with a best leap of 16.02m.

Behind Lewis in the men’s 800m were Oliver Lloyd (1:52.22) and Nate Gordon (1:52.38), who placed fifth and sixth, respectively. On the women’s side, Katie Fortner PR’d in the women’s 800m race. Fortner achieved her best career time of of 2:10.02 to place sixth overall.

Green, also the 2017 ACC indoor triple jump champion, became the only outdoor triple jumper in Clemson history to record a distance above 16.00m. Green’s third jump of the day surpassed Shai Carpenter’s 2015 program record of 15.95m. Freshman D.J. Ledell (14.96m) and Ishmael Kamara (14.93m) placed seventh and eighth, respectively.

In the women’s triple jump, freshman Harleigh White posted her all-conditions best of 12.45m. White’s second jump of the day earned her a fourth place finish, but unfortunately registered a wind aid of 2.1 m/sec.

Up next, Clemson heads to LSU’s Alumni Gold meet, April 19-21.
