November 23, 1998

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Clemson senior cross country runner Joe Gibson competed in the NCAA Cross Country Championship Meet Monday in Kansas. Gibson placed 168th out of 255 runners in the event, running the 10K race in 32:55. Colorado’s Adam Goucher won the race in 29:26, taking first place by 23 seconds over the second-place runner. Arkansas won the team title, while ACC teams N.C. State and Duke placed eighth and 26th, respectively.

“Joe suffered an abdominal injury during the region meet and was unable to fully recover before the national meet,” said Clemson head coach Bob Pollock. “I know he is disappointed in his finish, but this was a really demanding course for all of the runners. It is always an honor to get to the national championships, and Joe gained valuable experience at the meet.”

Gibson earned all-ACC honors after placing second at the conference meet with a time of 24:45.7 over the 8K course. He placed seventh at the region meet with a time of 30:21 on the 10K course to earn all-Region honors.
