Georgia Southern Downs Clemson 12-9 in Extra Innings

CLEMSON, S.C. – Georgia Southern scored three runs in the 10th inning to secure a 12-9 victory over Clemson Tuesday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

Georgia Southern began the scoring in the second inning after loading the bases against starter Steven Jackson. A run scored after an error on Tiger first baseman Michael Johnson and another runner crossed home plate on J.R. Revere’s ground out.

Clemson answered by manufacturing four runs in the bottom of the inning. Designated hitter Jarrod Schmidt scored on a Ryan Riley sacrifice fly and right fielder Kyle Frank scored on a wild pitch. Khalil Greene’s single drove in Chad Coder and Casey Stone crossed the plate after a Georgia Southern error to give Clemson a 4-2 lead.

After the teams traded runs in the third inning, the Eagles jumped ahead in the fourth inning. Chris Walker knocked in a run with an infield single and Scott Henly followed two batters later with a two-run double. Matt Herring capped the inning with an RBI single to center field that gave Georgia Southern a 7-5 lead.

The lead stretched to 9-6 when Clemson responded in the eighth. Doubles by Greene, Johnson and Schmidt cut the deficit to 9-8, setting the stage for a ninth-inning rally. Pinch hitter Casey Stone and the game moved to extra innings.

Georgia Southern’s Walker scored in the 10th after a Tiger error and then Herring blasted a two-run home run to center field to make the final margin 12-9.

Coder, Stone and Greene combined for six hits and four runs scored to lead the Clemson offense. Jeff deRijke (1-0) earned the win for Georgia Southern while Clemson’s Josh Cram fell to 0-1. The Tigers dropped to 10-5 while Georgia Southern moved to 12-6.

The two teams will conclude their two-game series Wednesday at 3:00 PM. The game will be broadcast on WCSZ-AM (1070) in Greenville.
