Former Tiger Edward Martin Passes

July 15, 2004

Edward Malcolm “Big Ed” Martin died Wednesday, July 14, 2004. Mr. Martin was a graduate of Clemson University Class of 1951. He was a member of the 1948 undefeated football team, which was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame after defeating Missouri in the Gator Bowl. Mr. Martin was also a member of the 1951 Orange Bowl Team. While playing football for Clemson, he was nicknamed “Piggy” by Coach Frank Howard. He played his high school ball for Edmunds High School in Sumter, and was a member of the 1944 Shrine Bowl Team.

Born in Sumter, SC, he was the son of late John Patrick and Mary Martin. He was employed by Barclay’s American Credit in Camden, and helped start First Financial in Camden. Mr. Martin was also a veteran of the United States Army, and was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 16, 2004 at 2:00 pm at Lakeview Baptist, with burial to follow in Sumter Cemetery. Reverend Hugh McKinney will officiate. The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 15, 2004, from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm in Kornegay Funeral Home’s Camden Chapel.

Surviving are a daughter, Donna Hartsell, and her husband, Jerry, of Greenville, TN, sons Edward “Eddie” M. Martin, Jr. of Camden, Patrick W. Martin and his wife, Sharon of Cassatt, and Charles “Chip” R. Martin, II and his wife, Sarah of Easley, grandchildren, Bart and Todd Hartsell, Patrick, II, Leighanna, Amelia, Anna Martin, great-grandchildren, Alexis and Casey Hartsell; sisters, Leila Martin Wiggins of Miami, FL, and Mary Martin Krumpotich of Sumter, brother Bobby Martin of Lugoff. He was predeceased by his wife, Hazel Stanford Martin, sisters Margaret Broadway and Patsy Adams.
