Five Tigers Qualify in 100 Meters

May 8, 2004

Clemson, SC – Derrick Wyatt and Terrance McDaniel were event winners, and five different Tigers qualified for the NCAA regional meet in the 100 meters, to highlight competition by the Clemson men’s track team in the Orange & Purple Track Classic on Saturday afternoon at the Rock Norman Track Complex in Clemson. It was the final home meet of the year for Bob Pollock’s Tigers.

Wyatt, a junior from nearby Liberty, SC, won the 1500 meters in a time of 3:49.18. Teammate Matt Clark, a freshman from Hyannis, MA, finished second in that event with a time of 3:50.25. McDaniel won the high jump with a leap of 7′ 1/2″. It was a regional qualifying leap for the senior from Gray Court, SC. He also finished fourth in the high jump.

Those were the only two event champions for Clemson on Saturday, but many other athletes had outstanding performances. In the 100 meters, Airese Currie (10.22), Tye Hill (10.29), Ron Richards (10.50), George Kitchens (10.55) all qualified for the NCAA regional meet, which his still three weeks away. All of those qualifying marks were run during the prelims. Currie and Hill did not run in the finals of the 100 so they could save their energies for the 200 meters. The strategy worked as they both had qualifying times in the 200 meters as well.

Danny Alge also had a strong meet as the 6-4 freshman from Summerville,SC finished second in the hammer (55.07 meters) and was5th in the discus (49.04 meters)
