Five Clemson Golfers Ranked in top 50 of Mastercard Rankings

May 1, 1998

Clemson, SC

Five Clemson golfers are ranked among the top 50 in the nation according to the latest NCAA Mastercard Collegiate Golf Rankings. Larry Penley’s team is the only school in the nation to have five players ranked in the top 50 in the country and they are a big reason Clemson ranks second in the team poll.

Leading the way in the national rankings for the Tigers is junior Jonathan Byrd of Columbia, who ranks 14th in the latest list. He is followed by fellow Columbia, SC native Charles Warren, who is 16th. Joey Maxon (Dover, DE) is ranked 34th in the list, while freshmen John Engler (Augusta, GA) and Lucas Glover (Greenville, SC) are 37th and 42nd, respectively.

While Clemson has five players in the top 50, no other school has more than three. UNLV, the number-one ranked team in the nation, Arizona, ranked fourth as a team, OklahomaState, rated 7th and TCU, ranked 8th, are the schools with three top 50 players.
