Cullowhee, NC – The Clemson men’s track & field team began competition at the Western Carolina Invitational on Friday. Freshman long jumper George Fields finished first in his event and established a facility record on his way to a regional-qualifying effort.

Fields posted a mark of 24’4.5″, a personal best for the first-year student-athlete, and finished ahead of Chris Gaillard and Rashad Herndon, a pair of Catamount performers. It was the second regional-qualifying standard he surpassed in two meets this outdoor season. Jason Bell also competed in the long jump on Friday, as the junior posted a mark of 22’4.25″ and was fourth overall.

Danny Alge was in the discus throw as well on the first day of competition, and the junior from Summerville, SC won the event with a toss of 158’5″. It was his best effort so far in the young outdoor season.

The remainder of events will be held on Saturday from the Catamount Athletic Complex. The first scheduled event for Clemson will be the hammer throw at 10:00 AM.
