Ferguson Named To Palmer Cup Team

April 13, 2004

NORMAN, Okla. – Three players – Clemson’s Jack Ferguson, Ryan Moore of UNLV and Lamar’s Chris Stroud – have been named to complete the United States team that will compete in the 2004 Palmer Cup presented by Monster announced the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). This Ryder Cup-style competition will be played at Ballybunion Golf Club in County Kerry, Ireland, August 6-7.

The player who sank the winning put for Clemson in both the ACC and NCAA Championships last season, Ferguson was a second-team PING All-America and first-team All-ACC selection in 2003. The junior from Seneca, S.C., has four top 10 finishes this season – his best a third-place showing at the Atlanta Intercollegiate. Ferguson holds the Clemson record with 15 consecutive rounds at par or better, which he set last season. He competed in the 2003 Fuji Xerox USA vs. Japan Collegiate Golf Championship where he posted a 2-0-1 record.

Moore will be competing in his second Palmer Cup presented by Monster after compiling a 1-2-1 mark in 2003. The Puyallup, Wash., native has earned PING All-America and All-Mountain West conference honors twice and was a finalist for The Ben Hogan Award last season. A junior, Moore leads the Mountain West Conference with a 69.96 scoring average. He has finished in the top five in seven of the 10 tournaments he has played. Moore has broken 70 on 14 occasions and shot 64 in three rounds. He earned his second collegiate victory this spring at the National Invitational Tournament.

The current NCAA Division I leader in tournament victories, Stroud has won six (Baylor Invitational, SMU Stonebridge Invitational, Squire Creek Intercollegiate, Del Walker Intercollegiate, Herb Wimberly/NMSU Invitational, Carter Plantation Intercollegiate) of the 10 tournaments that he has competed in this season. A senior from Port Arthur, Texas, Stroud has posted 21 consecutive rounds of par or better dating back to last fall. A recipient of third-team PING All-America accolades in 2003, Stroud became the first player to win Southland Conference Player of the Year honors three times and just the third three-time Southland Conference first-team selection.

The team will be coached by Clemson’s Larry Penley.

The U.S. team leads the Palmer Cup presented by Monster Series, 4-2-1.
