Engler Leads ACC Tournament

Engler Leads ACC Tournament

April 20, 2001

Orlando, FL – John Engler continued his outstanding play in the ACC Tournament with an opening round 66, leading Clemson to a four-under-par team total and a third-place standing after the first round of the ACC men’s Golf Tournament in Orlando, FL. Engler holds the first round lead by a shot over North Carolina freshman Dustin Bray, who fired a 67. Clemson is the defending team champion and has won three of the last four ACC tournaments.

The 54-hole event continues on Saturday with 18 more holes at the par 72, 7,093-yard Magnolia Course at the Walt Disney World Golf Complex. Clemson stands third with a 284 total, four shots in back of first place Georgia Tech, who shot a 280 for the first round, and three shots behind Wake Forest, who stands at 281.

Engler’s 66 was the low round by a Clemson golfer this spring and his lowest score since shooting a final round and career best 64 at the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate in Birmingham, AL in October.

Engler has been a standout for the Tigers in the ACC Tournament his entire career. He is bidding to become the fifth different Clemson golfer to win the ACC Tournament. Charles Warren, a two-time champion in 1997 and 1998, is the last Clemson player to win the ACC Tournament.

The senior from Augusta, GA already has three top five finishes in the event and is trying to become the first Clemson golfer to have four top five finishes at the ACC Tournament. His six-under-par score was the second best score vs. par by a Tiger golfer this year, second only to his seven-under 64 at the Jerry Pate. He had three birdies on each side and no bogeys in his round on Friday.

Clemson counted another under-par score and one at par in recording the 284 team total. D.J. Trahan, playing in his first college event since competing in The Masters two weeks ago, had a steady 71 in the opening round. He stands tied for eighth. Senior Lucas Glover carded an even par 72 and is tied for 16th. Sophomore Ben Duncan added a 75, while freshman Gregg Jones shot 79.
