Dischner’s Golden Goal Upsets Eighth Ranked Clemson

Sept. 1, 2001

FULLERTON, Calif.— Junior David Dischner beat two defenders and buried the ball near post to propel Cal State Fullerton to a, 2-1, upset victory over eighth-ranked Clemson late Friday night in the second game of the 2001 FILA Classic at Fullerton, CA.

The Titans improve to 1-0 overall on the season, while the Tigers fall to 0-1. The Titans will face Loyola of Maryland on Sunday evening at approximately 7:30 p.m. while Clemson will face California at 5 p.m. to kick off day two action. Both times are PDT. With the score tied at, 1-1, Cal State Fullerton had a chance to win it in the 87th minute when Adriano Lima was dragged down in the box, giving the Titans a penalty kick. However, Hector Orellana pushed the attempt and glanced it off the right post preserving the tie. The two teams were then held scoreless for the remainder of regulation and the first six minutes of overtime before Dischner’s goal clinched the victory.

The victory avenged a 5-1 loss to the Tigers at Clemson last season. Clemson scored in the second minute of play on a goal by Ian Fuller, who took a wide-open pass and beat Titan keeper Jeff McKeever for a 1-0 lead. Cal State Fullerton evened the score with just 35 seconds remaining in the first half as Cameron McKinnon took a long pass from midfield and beat the keeper to knot the game at 1-1.
