June 20, 2006

Clemson, SC – Clemson sophomore running back James Davis is one of eight ACC players on the 2006 Maxwell Award Watch List. The award is presented each year to the Collegiate Player of the Year in college football by the Maxwell Football Club of Philadelphia, PA.

Davis was named the ACC’s Rookie of the Year in 2005 when he led the Tigers in rushing with 879 yards and in touchdowns with nine. He established Clemson freshmen records for touchdowns (9), yards per rush (5.33) and all-purpose running yards (1031).

The native of Atlanta, GA was a second-team Freshman All-American by Rivals.com and a third-team Freshman All-American by Collegefootballnews.com. He concluded the year with a 150-yard rushing performance against Colorado in the Champs Sports Bowl. He was named the Most Valuable Player of that game.

This summer, Davis has been named a preseason first-team All-ACC running back by Athlon, Lindy’s and The Sporting News. He ranks as the eighth best running back in the nation by The Sporting News.

The other seven ACC Players on the Maxwell Award Watch List are Lorenzo Booker of Florida State, Sam Hollenbach of Maryland, Calvin Johnson of Georgia Tech, Tyrone Moss of Miami (FL), Greg Olsen of Miami (FL), Drew Weatherford of Florida State and Kyle Wright of Miami (FL).

Twelve semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced in October and the field will be trimmed to three finalists in November. The winner of the award will be announced at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show in Orlando, FL in December.
