Danny Alge Earns ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Honor

June 20, 2006

Clemson, SC – Clemson men’s track & field athlete Danny Alge was named to one of ESPN The Magazine’s Academic All-America teams on Thursday. Alge was a second-team selection by members of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America). Alge was previously honored this month as a first-team Academic All-District selection as well.

Alge is the sixth Tiger track & field athlete ever to receive CoSIDA Academic All-America honors. Clemson’s most recent honoree was Rick Hill, who earned Academic All-America recognition in both 2002 and 2003. Other former track & field Academic All-Americans from Clemson include Dov Kremer (1991), Cormac Finnerty (1991), Mike Kauffman (1993-94), and Doug Ameigh (2002).

This is the second straight year Alge has been honored by an organization for his academic efforts. Last season, the Summerville, SC native was an All-Academic honoree by the U.S. Track & Field & Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Alge, who graduated magna cum laude from Clemson with a degree in biosystems engineering (emphasis in applied biotechnology) on May 12, was also a standout field event athlete this season with the Tiger track & field squad. He competed at the NCAA East Region Championships and recorded his best-ever mark in the hammer throw at 201’7″. That mark ranks second in school history in that event. Alge also ranks in the top five in Clemson history in the indoor weight throw.
