@ClemsonWBB Drops Sunday Contest at Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – The Clemson women’s basketball team fell to Virginia (12-10, 5-4 ACC), 80-43, at John Paul Jones Arena on Sunday. The Tigers (11-12, 3-6 ACC) suffered their worst defeat of the season at the hands of the Cavaliers. Clemson, who entered the game shooting .424 on the season, hit just 15-49 (.306) from the floor and had 22 turnovers.  Nikki Dixon, who had scored 19 or more in eight straight games, scored just eight points, and was just 2-7 form the floor with six turnovers. Senior Quinyotta Pettaway had a team-high 12 points, her fourth straight game in double-figures. Kelly Gramlich scored nine points on three three-pointers, giving her 49 on the season and 113 in her career.  Head Coach Audra Smith, a 1992 Virginia graduate, fell in her first trip to her alma mater with the Tigers.  Clemson took a 12-11 lead five minutes in, with five points coming from Pettaway. However, Virginia scored 17 unanswered points over the next five minutes to snag a 28-12 lead. The Cavalier lead swelled to 21 with 6:06 left in the half before the Tigers trimmed the margin to 38-21 at the half.  A 14-4 Cavalier run over the first 4:24 of the second half all but put the game out of reach, as Virginia scored 23 points off 12 Clemson turnovers in the half, and shot 14-27 (.519) from the floor.  Clemson will return to action in a televised contest on Thursday against No. 3 Duke in Littlejohn Coliseum.  Player of the Game: Quinyotta Pettaway had 12 points and two blocks, her 4th straight gam ein double-figures Stat of the Game: 33 – Virginia scored 33 points off 22 Clemson turnovers, including 23 in the second half Team Notes:

  • The Tigers had won two ACC games in a row entering Sunday, including a 60-52 win at home against Miami and an 80-79 overtime win at Georgia Tech on Thursday
  • Clemson had 22 turnovers in the contest, tied for the third-most in a game this season, which led to a season-high 33 points off turnovers for the Cavs
  • Clemson fell to 30-39 all-time against Virginia, and 10-21 in Charlottesville
  • Clemson’s .306 shooting performance was its 4th-lowest in this season in 23 games
  • The 22 turnovers are tied for the 3rd-most in a game this season
  • The 37-point margin of defeat is the highest for the Tigers this season. It was the largest margin of defeat since an 80-40 loss at Maryland on Jan. 27, 2013. 

Individual Notes:

  • Head Coach Audra Smith, a 1992 Virginia Grad, fell in her return to Charlottesville as Clemson’s head coach
  • Nikki Dixon scored eight points, upping her career total to 1,027, and moving her past Melinda Ashworth into 21st place in Clemson history. She needs just six points in the next game to move into 20th
  • Quinyotta Pettaway scored 12 points on 5-11 shooting. It is her fourth straight game in double-figures, and 39th of her career
  • Kelly Gramlich hit three three-pointers, her ninth game this season with three or more in a game
  • Nyilah Jamison-Myers had two blocks in the game, giving her 20 on the season. She now has 46 in her career.
