Clemson’s Ulfarsdottir and Oliveira Qualify For NCAA Championship Finals

AUSTIN, TX – Clemson women’s track and field completed day two of the 2004 NCAA Championships on Friday at the Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin with two qualifiers for Saturday’s finals. Silja Ulfarsdottir and Gisele Oliveira will compete in the finals of the 400m hurdles and triple jump, respectively.

Oliveira automatically qualified for Saturday’s finals with a mark of 44’3.5″. She is in pursuit of her third consecutive All-America honor and her mark in Friday’s preliminaries was the second-best performance of the day. Oliveira owns a personal-best mark of 44’10.75″

In the 400m hurdles, Ulfarsdottir crossed the finish line in 57.54 to enter Saturday’s finals as the eighth qualifier. She owns a season-best time of 57.48, and this is her first appearance in an individual event at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. With a top eight finish in Saturday’s finals, Ulfarsdottir could become the Lady Tigers’ second 400m hurdle All-American.

Christina Smith also competed in the preliminaries of the 400m hurdles on Friday. The freshman from Philadelphia, PA, recorded a time of 59.69 in her first individual appearance at the NCAA Championships. With today’s performance, Smith became only the fourth Lady Tiger to represent Clemson at the national meet in the intermediate hurdles and the first freshman to earn that distinction.
