Clemson’s Parker, Dwyer Sweep ACC Baseball Weekly Honors

April 13, 2009

GREENSBORO, NC – Clemson’s Kyle Parker has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Player of the Week, and Chris Dwyer has received Pitcher of the Week honors following recent game action that included seeing the Tigers take two of three games from fifth-ranked Miami.

Parker, a sophomore outfielder, had an outstanding week on two fronts. On the diamond, he went 8-for-18 (.444) with two doubles, two homers, 11 RBIs, four runs, and three walks in five games this past week against arch-rival South Carolina and Miami.

In the home-and-home series against the Gamecocks, Parker totaled four hits, two doubles, and four RBIs, then he went 6-for-14 with two homers and seven RBI to lead Clemson to two wins in three games against the Hurricanes. The Jacksonville, Fla., native had at least one hit and one RBI in all five games (and at least two RBIs in four of the five games) during the week.

In a remarkable day on Saturday, Parker first led his White squad to a 30-13 win in Clemson’s Spring Football Game by completing 13-of-21 passes for 171 yards and one touchdown against no interceptions, along with a rushing touchdown, then rushed over to Doug Kingsmore Stadium to play a doubleheader against the Hurricanes. Parker missed the first few innings of the first game after running from the football stadium, but in the doubleheader he was 3-for-7 with two homers and five RBIs. On the season, he is hitting .286 with seven homers and 33 RBIs in 32 games (31 starts).

The second game of the Clemson-Miami doubleheader saw Dwyer deliver a masterful performance against one of the nation’s best teams. The freshman left-hander pitched a complete game two-hitter to earn the victory in Clemson’s 9-1 win.

The Swampscott, Mass., native struck out a career-high 10 batters and allowed just two runners past first base, including only one runner past second base, during the entire game. In a full nine innings pitched, Dwyer allowed two hits, one run, and four walks with 10 strikeouts in Clemson’s first complete game of 2009. On the season, Dwyer is 4-2 with a 4.40 ERA and .210 opponents’ batting average in 47 innings pitched over nine starts.
