Clemson Women’s Tennis Upset By Brigham Young University

PROVO, UT – The Clemson women’s tennis team was upset by Brigham Young University by a score of 4-3 on Tuesday evening. With the loss, Clemson’s season record stands at 11-3, while the Cougars of BYU improve to 12-4 on the year. The Tigers will complete their three-match slate in Provo on Wednesday as Clemson faces Boise State in a 10:30 AM match. This will be the first meeting between Clemson and Boise State. The Broncos are currently ranked 63rd in the ITA poll and have tallied an 8-4 overall record so far this season.

In singles play, top-seeded and sixth-ranked Julie Coin of Clemson was defeated by #45 Barbora Zahnova of BYU in three sets, 6-7, 7-6, 6-0. Clemson’s Daniela Alvarez downed the Cougar’s Sofia Holden in straight sets by a score of 6-1, 7-5. At number three singles, the Tigers picked up another point as #91 Maria Brito defeated Lauren Jones of BYU by a score of 6-4, 6-2. Clemson’s Karen Rombouts dropped another hard-fought match, falling to Olga Boulytcheva by a score of 5-7, 6-1, 7-5. BYU’s Rebecca Pike defeated Richele LeSaldo at five singles by a score of 7-5, 6-4, and Hadley Macfarlane edged Clemson’s Ioana Paun at six singles (6-3, 6-2).

Clemson claimed the doubles point to begin the match, despite an upset of the Tigers’ top doubles team. Clemson’s seventh-ranked tandem of Julie Coin fell to BYU’s Zahnova and Holden by a score of 8-6 at number one doubles. At two doubles, the Tigers’ duo of Daniela Alvarez and Karen Rombouts defeated the Cougars’ three doubles team of Pike and Schneider by a score of 8-5 to secure the doubles point for the Tigers.
