Clemson Women’s Tennis Sweeps Furman, 7-0, On Thursday

CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson women’s tennis team remained perfect on the year with a 7-0 sweep of Furman on Thursday afternoon. The Tigers (5-0) won all three doubles matches and all six players posted straight set wins in singles play.

Ani Mijacika posted her second straight top-10 victory as the Clemson junior defeated ninth-ranked Laura Gioia, 6-4, 6-2, at the top singles flight. She improved to 17-3 overall and 5-0 in dual matches. Josipa Bek also recorded a win over a ranked opponent, edging #47 Monica Arguello by a 7-6(5), 6-2 margin in the flight two match-up. At number three, Keri Wong won her fifth straight with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Furman’s Jessica Preeg.

Estefania Balda then picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win against Susan Bitetti at the flight four position and Alexandra Luc defeated Lauren Tomory at the fifth spot, 6-1, 6-3. At flight six, Ina Hadziselimovic easily handled the Paladins’ Jennifer Betts as the Clemson junior did not drop a game in the match.

The Tigers improved to 4-1 in doubles action with wins at all three positions on Thursday. Mijacika and Wong partnered at the number-one position to narrowly defeat Furman’s team of Gioia and Aruguello in a tie-break, 9-8(5). Hadziselimovic and Bek then teamed up for the first time this year and downed Preeg and Tomory, 8-0, at flight two. Balda and Luc then posted an 8-0 victory over the Paladin tandem of Betts and Mosteller.

Clemson will return to action on Saturday afternoon as the Tigers take on sixth-ranked Georgia at the Clemson Indoor Tennis Center. The match-up is slated to begin at 2:30 pm.
