Clemson Women’s Tennis Player Eliminated From NCAA Tournament

MALIBU, CA–Katarina Malec of UNLV defeated Clemson’s Carmina Giraldo 6-0, 6-1 in the second round of the NCAA Women’s Tennis Tournament Tuesday.

Giraldo upset Amy Jensen of California 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 in the first round of the NCAA Women’s Singles Championships at Malibu, CA late Monday night. Jensen was seeded 9-16 in the 64-player draw.

Giraldo finished the season with a 29-8 record in singles matches. She is a sophomore from Pereira, South America and is Clemson’s only entry in this year’s individual tournament.

Giraldo’s victory was Clemson’s first victory in the NCAA Singles Tournament since Sophie Woorons advanced to the tournament’s semifinals in 1996. It was also the Lady Tigers’ fourth first round victory since 1988.
