Clemson Women’s Tennis Falls 4-1 To Wake Forest In NCAA Region Finals

May 12, 2002

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The 40th-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team fell 4-1 to #8 Wake Forest in the finals of the NCAA Regional Tournament held at the Wake Forest University Upper Eight Courts on Sunday. The Tigers finish their season with a 14-11 overall record, while the Demon Deacons advance to the NCAA Sweet 16 with a 23-5 record.

Wake Forest went out to a 1-0 lead after the Demon Deacons won the doubles point with victories at #2 and #3 doubles. Janet Bergman and Maren Haus defeated Anna Dolinska and Anna Savitskaya 8-2 at the two doubles position, and the Demon Deacon’s duo of Katie Martzolf and Danielle Schwartz clinched the doubles point at the three doubles flight with an 8-1 win over Clemson’s Richele LeSaldo and Milena Stanoycheva.

In singles action, Clemson’s top-seeded and 32nd-ranked Anna Savitskaya 6-3, 6-2. The three singles flight match between Maren Haus and Clemson’s Milena Stanoycheva defeated the Demon Deacons’ Danielle Schwartz, 7-5, 6-2.

Clemson head coach Nancy Harris said, “We still have a lot of growing to do. We tip our hat to Wake Forest, they are a solid team. They blew us away in doubles. I believed in this team all year. We proved yesterday how dangerous we can be. I was concerned about fatigue, but I’m not sure that it made a difference today. Doubles was a big factor. The conditions were tough, only because of the fatigue and the heat. Wake Forest has a very good chance at the NCAAs; they are a very solid team. If they play doubles like they did today, they’ll be very tough.”
