Clemson Women’s Tennis Earns #3 Seed For 2009 ACC Tournament

GREENSBORO, NC – The Clemson women’s tennis team will begin defense of its conference title this week as the 2009 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship is set to kickoff on Thursday at the Cary Tennis Center in Cary, NC. The Tigers earned the number three seed and a first-round by for this year’s tournament and will take on the winner of sixth-seeded North Carolina and #11-seed Maryland at 3:00 pm on Friday afternoon.

Clemson captured the 2008 title as the fourth seed for the program’s eighth ACC Championship. The Tigers posted a 9-2 record during the conference regular season (17-6 overall) to tie Georgia Tech in standings, but Clemson received the higher seed due to its 4-3 win over the Yellow Jackets in February.

Miami and Duke both finished with a 10-1 league mark but the Hurricanes earned the top position due to the head-to-head match-up.

Florida State will be the fifth seed followed by North Carolina at number six, Virginia at number seven and Virginia Tech at number eight. Wake Forest, Boston College, Maryland and NC State then round out the bottom four.

Last year, the Tigers defeated the fifth-seeded Tar Heels in the quarterfinals (4-2) before upsetting #1-seed Georgia Tech in Saturday’s semifinals (4-1). Clemson then outlasted number-two seed Duke in the championship match (4-3).
