Clemson Women’s Tennis Completes Competition At Southern Intercollegiate

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Clemson women’s tennis team completed competition at the 2002 Southern Intercollegiate Sunday. The Tigers’ doubles team of Ana Stiglic and Richele LeSaldo placed second in the A2 doubles draw, and LeSaldo claimed third in the B1 singles flight to lead the Tigers at the tournament.

In the A1 singles draw, Stiglic and Ioana Paun advanced to the quarterfinals. Stiglic defeated Winthrop’s Renata Barretta 6-1, 6-1 before falling to South Carolina’s Jodi Kenoyer in three sets by a score of 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. Paun defeated Coastal Carolina’s Medana Bajrambasic 6-1, 6-1 in the first round, but lost to South Carolina’s Danielle Wiggins 6-4, 1-6, 6-1. Stiglic was also defeated by the Gamecocks’ Catherine Brown 7-5, 6-3.

Laurence Jayet and Anna Dolinska competed in the A2 singles draw, taking ninth and seventh-place, respectively. Jayet defaulted her first-round match to South Carolina’s Magda Wojdylo, then defeated Kasia Finkowski 6-4, 6-0. Jayet picked up another win over Coastal Carolina’s Dana Goffin by a score of 6-2, 6-1, then defeated Winthrop’s Ana Simanca 6-0, 6-2. Dolinska defeated Western Carolina’s Megan Bechtold 6-2, 6-1 in her first round match, then lost to South Carolina’s Catherine Brown 7-5, 6-3. In the consolations, Dolinska fell to Coastal Carolina’s Marie Matrka 6-2, 6-3 before picking up a victory over Western Carolina’s Kristen Munn by a score of 6-0, 7-5.

In the flight B1 singles draw, Richele LeSaldo placed fifth and third, respectively. LeSaldo won her first round match over Presbyterian’s Taylor Lynch by a score of 6-0, 6-1, then defeated Coastal Carolina’s Petra Jantti in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. West Virginia’s Jennifer Watkins defeated LeSaldo by a score of 6-4, 6-2, but LeSaldo claimed the third-place match with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over South Carolina’s Audrey George. Harmon claimed her first round match with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Appalachian State’s Eva Goode, then fell to Coastal Carolina’s Stephanie Koot by a score of 6-3, 6-2. Harmon next defeated Winthrop’s Natasha Lucki by a score of 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 before falling to Coastal Carolina’s Jantti in three sets, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Paun and Dolinska narrowly lost their first round match to Coastal Carolina’s Bajrambasic and Matrka by the score of 9-8 (0). The Tigers duo defaulted to Western Carolina’s Zalinski and Bechtold, then won by default over Presbyterian’s Key and Lynch to place seventh.

In the A2 doubles draw, Stiglic and LeSaldo advanced to the finals before falling to South Carolina’s Wiggins and Suzuki by a score of 8-6. In their first round match, the Tigers defeated Winthrop’s Barreto and Caceres 8-3, then claimed an 8-1 victory over Underwood and Koontz to advance to the finals.

The Southern Intercollegiate Tournament was the Tiger team’s final event of the fall season; however, the Tigers’ Julie Coin will compete at the Omni/ITA National Indoor Championships on Nov. 7-10 after claiming the 2002 Omni/ITA Southeast Region singles title.
