Clemson Women’s Tennis Competes at Midwest Blast Tournament

Champaign, IL – The Clemson women’s tennis team participated in the Midwest Blast Tournament played Oct. 6-8 at the University of Illinois’ Atkins Tennis Center. Tiger junior Anna Savitskaya advanced to the finals of the singles draw where she lost a 6-4, 6-1 decision to Illinois’ Carla Rosenberg. Savitskaya defeated Texas A&M’s Leah Killen, Julie Morris of Tulane, and Illinois’ Jennifer McGaffigan en route to the finals.

“The lower part of our lineup (two of the top players were participating in the WTT National Collegiate Tennis Championships) represented Clemson very well this weekend. This was a very positive experience for the team and an opportunity for these players to get some good experience,” said head coach Anna Savitskaya’s results. She had a great tournament. This weekend Anna played some of her best tennis since she came to Clemson.”

In other singles action, Christina Oldock lost to eventual-champion Carla Rosenberg in a tough three-set match (2-6, 6-3, 5-7) while Ana Stiglic lost to Texas A&M’s Kit Carson 0-6, 6-7(3) and Tulane’s Anneli Axsater 3-6, 6-7(5). Ashlea Bowen was defeated by Roberta Spencer (Texas A&M) 0-6, 2-6 and lost to Spencer’s teammate Robyn Basset in three sets (7-5, 4-6, 1-6). Sunnie Harmon lost a 2-6, 3-6 decision to Tulane’s Olga Mikhailova and was defeated by Eva Marcial (Texas A&M) 1-6, 2-6.

Oldock and Savitskaya lost a 5-8 decision to Texas A&M’s Leah Killen and Ashley Backus in the second round of the doubles draw. Bown and Harmon lost to Spencer and Marcial 2-8 in the first round. Tulane’s Cook and Mikhailova defeated Brown and Harmon 8-1 in consolation play.

Clemson will compete in the ITA All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif., on Oct. 19-22.
