Clemson Women’s Swimming Ranked in Top 25 Heading Into NCAA Championships

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson women’s swimming team is ranked 21st in the most recent CSCAA Speedo America poll released last Thursday. Clemson finished the year with a 4-4 overall record and a 1-2 mark in the ACC, and posted a third place finish with 523.50 points at the ACC Swimming and Diving Championships. The women’s NCAA Championships are this Thursday through Saturday in Long Island, NY.

Four Clemson Tigers qualified to compete in the NCAA Championships for head coach Bruce Marchionda. Patty Hider (Reston, VA), Elise Thieler (Harbor Township, NJ) and Lindsey Kroeger (Cincinatti, OH) will represent the Tigers at the national meet. The Tigers will compete in eight different events, including the 50 free, 100 free, 100 fly, 100 breast, 200 breast, 200 medley relay, 400 medley relay and the 200 free relay.

Thieler will compete in the 50 free and the 100 fly. She is seeded 29th in the 50 free with a time of 23.14 and is seeded 24th in the 100 fly with a time of 54.73. The New Jersey native won the 100 fly event at the ACC Championships.

Hider will compete in 50 and 100 free events. She is seeded 37th in the 50 free and is also in the 100 free as the 49th seed (50.64).

Commons is the highest seeded Tiger in any event with a seeding of 10 in the 100 breast (1:01.86). She was also invited to compete in the 200 breast with a seeding of 34th (2:17.60). Commons was an All-ACC honoree and finished second in the 100 breast.

The Tiger 200 medley relay team of Commons, Hider, Thieler and Kroeger is seeded 11th entering the NCAAs with a time of 1:41.28. Clemson’s relay team will also compete in the 400 medley relay and the 200 free relay.

Patty Hider placed second. The team’s time of 1:41.28 set a school record by more than two seconds.
