Greenville, SC — Freshman Courtney Foster scored two second half goals as the 19th-ranked Clemson women’s soccer team defeated No. 23 Dayton on Friday afternoon at the Furman Select Kickoff Classic.

Clemson dominated the first half of the match, unleashing a flurry of shots. The Lady Tigers outshot Dayton 16-2 in the first period and forced Dayton goalkeeper Stacy DeLuca to make five first half saves.

Clemson’s best scoring opportunity in the first half came just three minutes before intermission. Sarah Turner sent a long pass to Lydia Vandenbergh over the top of the Dayton defense. Vandenbergh took a shot on goal that was saved by DeLuca. The rebound squirted out to Kelly Schneider who sent a 15-yard shot just wide of the open net.

Clemson finally got on the board at the 59:10 mark as Courtney Foster scored her fourth goal on the season. The play was set up as Amanda Garcia won the ball from a defender and fed Foster the ball just outside the penalty area. Foster took a touch and slid the ball past DeLuca to the far post.

The Lady Tigers extended their lead in the 76th minute as Foster netted her second goal of the match. Paige Ledford beat a defender and took the ball to the endline. Ledford passed the ball back toward the goal to Foster in front of the goal. Foster’s shot was tipped by DeLuca and rolled into the side netting.

“Today’s match was everything that I hoped for,” said head coach Todd Bramble. “We wanted to come out and create some energy, and we got off to a great start. Today we needed to make a statement against one of the better teams in the nation, and I am very pleased with today’s performance.”

With the win, Clemson improves to 4-1. The Lady Tigers return to action on Sunday afternoon when they face Rhode Island in the second round of the Furman Select Kickoff Classic.
