Clemson Women’s Rowing Selected for 2011 NCAA Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – The 11th-ranked Clemson women’s rowing team has been selected to the 2011 NCAA Championships that will take place May 27-29 at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center in Gold River, California.

The team championship is composed of 16 teams and each team is required to field two boats of eight rowers and one boat of four rowers. The teams were announced in the order of 1st Varsity 8 heats.

This is the Tigers’ third-straight team selection and the 1st Varsity 8’s fourth-straight selection. In 2009, Clemson’s Varsity 4 captured the school’s first-ever national championship.

“We are very excited to participate in the NCAA Championships again,” said Clemson head coach Robbie Tenenbaum. “I’m very proud of this team and I think we are peaking at the right time. We’re excited to race against the best programs in the country.”

Clemson’s 1st Varsity 8 will compete in the second of three heats and will face unranked Dartmouth, ninth-ranked Yale, sixth-ranked Brown, and California who is tied for first in the country.

The Tigers’ 2nd Varsity 8 will compete in the first of three heats and will face #10 Ohio State, #6 Brown and Princeton, who is tied for first in the country with California. The heat also includes 16th-ranked Michigan, who the Tigers’ defeated in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge in April.

Clemson’s Varsity 4 will compete in the first of three heats against #1 California, #1 Princeton, #10 Ohio State and #8 Michigan State.

“I’m so proud of our team and we can’t wait to race against the best teams in the country,” Tenenbaum continued. “These are programs that we really respect and we are excited to race against them.”
