Clemson Women’s Golf Team Finishes Tied for Fifth at Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational

CHAPEL HILL, NC – The Clemson women’s golf team finished the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational tied for fifth place with Alabama and South Carolina, giving the all freshmen team its third consecutive top five finish to begin its season.  The team finished runner-up in both of its first two tournaments, the Cougar Classic and the Lady Paladin Invitational. The prestigious tournament, held at Finley Golf Club in Chapel Hill, NC, featured 18 teams, 12 of which are in the Golfweek Top 25 rankings.  The Tigers were ranked 11th by the Golf Coaches Association entering the tournament. Duke, the only team in the field to shoot under par for the tournament, had rounds of two under par, six under par, and one over par to shoot seven under through 54 holes. Their impressive performance gave them an eleven stroke win over the second place team, Vanderbilt, who led the tournament after day one. Following Duke and Vanderbilt was Oklahoma in third place at seven over par and Arkansas at ten over par. Then, tied for fifth were Clemson, South Carolina and Alabama at 14 over par.  Florida, Wake Forest, and Auburn rounded out the top 10.Ashlan Ramsey, the number one female amateur player in the world according to Golfweek, won her second consecutive individual championship after winning the Lady Paladin Invitational September 22. She finished runner-up in the Cougar Classic, the program’s first ever tournament. The ACC Player of the Month for September defeated Jenny Hahn of Vanderbilt by four shots.  She finished with a nine under par score of 207 after rounds of 68-69-70. Ramsey has played nine rounds in her Clemson career and all nine have been at par or better.  She is 20 under par for the nine rounds.Sloan Shanahan had yet another consistent tournament for the Tigers.  She had rounds of 72-73-72, to finish the tournament with a score of 217 and in a tie for 14th.  She is coming off a second place finish in the Cougar Classic and a third place finish in the Lady Paladin Invitational.  Shanahan was recently named one of Golfweek‘s five freshmen to watch. McKenzie Talbert had another solid day with her second consecutive round of two over par 74. Lauren Salazar, who shot a one under par 71 on Saturday, struggled in her final round but still had a solid tournament.  Jessica Hoang rebounded to have her best round of the tournament at 78 on Sunday. Head Coach J.T. Horton‘s young squad will be back in action October 25-27 at the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, NC.
