Clemson Will Play North Carolina and Duke this Weekend

CLEMSON, SC–The Clemson men’s tennis team will play host to North Carolina on Friday and Duke on Sunday in the last weekend and home matches of the regular season for the Tigers.

The North Carolina match will begin at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, and the Duke Match will begin on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Matches will be held at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center. There is no admission for the contests this weekend.

Clemson has an 11-10 record overall and a 3-6 mark in the ACC. The Tigers are ranked 59th nationally according to the latest ITA poll. North Carolina has a 14-8 record overall and a 3-6 mark in the ACC. The Tar Heels are ranked 36th nationally.

Duke currently has a 12-7 record overall and a 5-4 ledger in league play. The Blue Devils are ranked 30th nationally.

This will be the 70th meeting between Clemson and North Carolina on the tennis courts. The Tar Heels lead the overall series 43-26. However, the Tigers lead the series in matches played at Clemson 14-12. The first meeting between the two schools occurred in the 1931 season.

This will be the 66th meeting between the Tigers and Duke on the tennis courts. The Blue Devils lead the overall series 34-31. The Tigers lead the series in matches played at Clemson 15-12. The two schools first met in men’s tennis in the 1956 season.

Clemson will begin play in the ACC Tournament on April 16-19 at Cary, NC.

The 2009 season marks the 100th year of men’s tennis at Tigertown. Clemson first sponsored men’s tennis in 1910 when two Tiger tennis players entered the annual state tournament. The first dual match was played in the 1921 season as the Tigers defeated Wofford 2-0 on April 28, in Spartanburg, SC.
