Clemson vs. Louisville postgame notes

Team Notes

* Today’s game was the inaugural meeting between Clemson and Louisville on the gridiron.

* With Clemson’s defensive touchdown in the second quarter, the Tigers have a defensive score in back-to-back games and have now scored three defensive touchdowns this season. The Tigers have also forced two safeties this season for a total of 22 points scored by the defense on the year.

* The two teams combined for just 125 rushing yards. That is the eighth fewest rushing yards by both teams in Clemson history. It is also the fewest since 2010, when Clemson and NC State combined for 109 rushing yards.

* Clemson totaled a season-low 229 yards of total offense in today’s game. That is the fewest yards of total offense in a Clemson win since 2010, when the Tigers recorded 213 yards in a 31-7 win over Maryland.

* Neither team converted a third-down conversion until the third quarter. Louisville converted on third down for the first time at the 6:00 mark of the third quarter, while the Tigers did so for the first time at the 2:25 mark of the third quarter. The two teams were a combined 3-33 for the game on third down.

* Clemson converted on just two of its 16 third downs in the game. That is the fewest third-down conversions in a game since 2011, when Clemson also recorded two third-down conversions in a loss to NC State. However, Clemson had exactly two third-down conversions in the first two games of the 2010 season and came away with wins in each of those.

* The Tigers held Louisville to 52 rushing yards in today’s game. It was the fourth game this season in which Clemson’s opponent failed to rush for 100 yards. The Cardinals entered the game averaging 156.5 rushing yards per game.

* Louisville’s 10 first downs were the fewest allowed by Clemson against an ACC foe since allowing 10 against Maryland in 2012.

Individual Notes

* Vic Beasley recorded his 29th career sack in the second quarter to set the Clemson career sack record. He passed Michael Dean Perry and Gaines Adams for the all-time lead. The sack was his eighth of the season and gave him eight straight games with a sack dating to last season. That is one shy of the Clemson record for consecutive games with a sack set by Da’Quan Bowers, who had a sack in nine straight games in 2010.

* Cole Stoudt came off-the-bench and completed 20 of a career-high 33 passes for 162 passing yards. His 162 passing yards is the second-highest total of his career, trailing only his 302 from the SC State game earlier this season.

* Artavis Scott recorded a career-high 10 receptions for 66 receiving yards to lead the Tigers. His 10 receptions are the most by a Tiger this season and the most in a game by a freshman since Sammy Watkins hauled in 10 catches against Auburn in 2011.

* Adam Humphries returned the first punt of the game 72 yards for a touchdown. It was the first punt return for a touchdown since 2009, when C.J. Spiller had a 77-yard punt return for a touchdown against Boston College. 

* Adam Humphries finished the game with 107 punt return yards in the game, the fifth-most punt return yards in a game in Clemson history. It is the most since 2009, when Spiller had 119 punt return yards against Boston College. 

* Tavaris Barnes recovered a fumble in the endzone for a touchdown in the second quarter. It is the first recovered fumble for a touchdown since 1998, when Chris Jones did so in 33-0 win over Furman.

* Adam Choice carried the ball a career-high 16 times for 61 rushing yards, his second-highest total this season. The freshman has compiled a team-high 117 rushing yards over the last two games.

* Jordan Leggett caught three passes for 43 receiving yards, the second-highest total of his career. Leggett totaled his career-high of 44 receiving yards against The Citadel last season.
