Clemson Volleyball Defeats Virginia, 3-0

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson volleyball team picked up its 14th win of the season with a 3-0 (30-25, 30-27, 30-28) sweep of the Virginia Cavaliers Saturday night. The Tigers improve to 14-11 overall and 5-5 in the ACC, while the Cavaliers fall to 7-19 overall and 1-9 in league play.

“It was great to get an ACC win tonight. We needed it,” said head coach Jolene Jordan Hoover. “The team did a nice job with its defensive play and passing, which allowed the middles to be effective.”

As a team, Clemson hit .208 while holding Virginia to a .190 hitting percentage. The Tigers tallied eight team blocks to the Cavaliers’ six team blocks, and Clemson had five service aces to Virginia’s one ace. Clemson also recorded 63 defensive saves, while Virginia posted 56 digs.

Lori Ashton led Clemson with 16 kills, a .414 hitting percentage, a career-high three service aces and four blocks (one solo). Marija Zoric posted 15 kills with a .323 hitting percentage, and Leslie Finn recorded a team-high 15 digs with three blocks (one solo). Jessi Betcher handed out 44 assists with 10 digs, and Stephanie Haskell recorded 12 defensive saves.

Virginia was led by Alexis Geocaris who posted 12 kills with a .364 hitting percentage and six blocks. Shannon Boyle added 10 kills with her .321 hitting percentage, and Whitney Ashcraft tallied 16 defensive saves. Lily Phillips dished out 38 assists with nine digs.

The Tigers return to action on Nov. 1 and 2 as Clemson travels to the state of North Carolina to face NC State and North Carolina. The match against the Wolfpack on Nov. 1 is scheduled for 7:00 PM, while the Nov. 2 match against the #11 Tar Heels is slated for 6:00 PM.
