Clemson Volleyball Defeats Furman, 3-1, On Saturday Afternoon

CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson volleyball team improved its overall record to 5-3 on Saturday afternoon with a 3-1 victory over the Furman Paladins at Jervey Gym. With the loss, Furman dropped to 5-6 overall.

Tiger Jeannette Abbott had a team-best 23 kills in the contest, while Danielle Hepburn recorded 18 kills on .571 hitting. Freshman setter Meghan Steiner led the team at the net with eight block assists, and Didem Ege had 18 defensive saves.

Chibuzo Aguocha and Kerry Wooten tied for team-high honors for Furman with 13 kills apiece.

Clemson scored the first four points of the first game and extended its lead to 19-11. Abbott tallied five kills in the game, including the game winner, as the Tigers won, 30-22.

Furman responded with a victory in the second game to knot the score at one game apiece. The Paladins used a five-point run to go ahead 23-19 and went on to claim the game by a 30-25 score.

In the third game, Clemson rallied from a 17-13 deficit to take a 19-17 advantage on the service of Hepburn. The Tigers went ahead 23-19 on a kill by Abbott and extended their lead to 29-19 with Abbott serving. Lia Proctor contributed a kill and a block solo during the stretch and closed out the game with a kill to give Clemson the 30-20 victory.

The Tigers then controlled the fourth game, taking advantage of an early 15-8 advantage. Abbott and Hepburn each recorded six kills, while Murphy tallied 12 set assists, in the game. A Hepburn kill clinched the match for Clemson with a 30-17 decision.

The Tigers begin the conference season next weekend, as they will take on Duke and Wake Forest on the road.
