Clemson Travels to Isleworth for Final Fall Tournament

Oct. 24, 2008

Clemson, SC – The eighth-ranked Clemson golf team will compete in its final fall tournament October 26-28 at the Isleworth-UCF Invitational at Windermere, FL. Clemson Head Coach Larry Penley will bring two seniors, two juniors and a freshman to the 18-team tournament that will include eight of the top 10 teams in the nation.

Clemson finished second in the strong field of 18 teams last year at the event played at Isleworth Golf and Country Club. The tournament will feature three days of 18-hole on the par 72 course that is 7,544 yards in length. In addition to the eighth ranked Tigers, top ranked Oklahoma State, second ranked Southern California, third ranked Georgia, fourth ranked Illinois, sixth ranked Alabama are in the field. The field also includes the last two national champions in Stanford and UCLA.

Clemson will be led by junior Kyle Stanley, who won the Carpet Classic in Dalton, GA in September. He was named national player of the week by Golfweek Magazine for that performance. The native of Gig Harbor, WA has a 71.22 stroke average through three tournaments, best on the Clemson team.

Sam Saunders will also be in the Clemson lineup. The native of Windermere, FL who has played many rounds on this Isleworth course, has already recorded two top 10 finishes at this tournament, the only Tiger who can make that claim.

David May and Phillip Mollica are two seniors who will compete for Clemson at the Sunday-Tuesday event. May has a 72.56 stroke average for the year, second best on the team, while Mollica has a 73.83 average. Both Tigers tied for third at The Brickyard in Clemson’s most recent tournament. It was the second best finish of May’s career and tied for the best for Mollica.

Rounding out the Clemson lineup will be red-shirt freshman Alex Boyd, who won a team qualifier for this event. Boyd was Clemson’s third best golfer at The Brickyard with a 219 score, good enough for 21st place.
