Clemson Tied for Third after 2 Rounds in Puerto Rico

Clemson, S.C.—Freshman Turk Pettit had his second consecutive round of two-under-par 69 on Saturday, leading Clemson to a 286 team score and a third-place standing after two rounds of the Puerto Rico Classic at Rio Mar, Puerto Rico. The 15-team tournament that includes teams from around the nation will conclude on Tuesday on the par 71 course.

Clemson, the defending champion of this event, and Georgia Tech tied for the best team score in the field on Monday (286). The Yellow Jackets have the 36-hole lead at six under par 562. Host school Purdue is second at one-under-par 567. Clemson, Oklahoma and NC State are tied for third at two-over-par 572, while No. 1 ranked Alabama is sixth at 10-over-par 578. Middle Tennessee State is seventh at 579 and Georgia is eighth at 580.

Pettit, a freshman who played high school golf and football in Auburn, Ala., but now resides with his family in North Carolina, had four birdies on the front side, his second nine of the day. He is just three shots back of Lee Hodgins of Alabama in the individual race. Hodgins has had rounds of 67-68 on the way to a 135 total.   Pettit is in fourth place after 36 holes, best among Clemson golferx. Pettit has played the par four holes in four-under-par, tied for best in the field.

Colby Patton, another freshman and the son of former Clemson All-American Chris Patton, had a one over par 72 on Monday after scoring a 69 on Sunday. Patton had three birdies, two bogeys and a double for the round. He actually made birdie on each of his first two holes.

Bryson Nimmer improved from a 73 to a 72 in the second round on Monday and stands in 24th place. The junior had three birdies, two bogeys and a double on his day. Doc Redman had his second consecutive round of 73 and stands in 30th place after 36 holes.

Freshman Kyle Cottam had a 77 and stands in 52nd place with a 151 total after two rounds.
