Clemson Tennis Upsets #18 Bulldogs In Athens, GA On Wednesday

ATHENS, GA – The 26th-ranked Tiger women’s tennis team posted a 4-3 upset over #18 Georgia and won their first match in Athens since the 1984-85 season on Wednesday afternoon. The match, Clemson’s fourth victory of 2006, was forced indoor due to inclement weather and dropped the Bulldogs to 3-4 on the year. The Tiger doubles team of Carol Salge and Federica van Adrichem shocked the ninth-ranked duo of Shadisha Robinson and Carolina Basu at the flight one position (8-5) for the pair’s fourth straight victory.

Their win helped the Tigers take a 1-0 lead in the match by claiming the doubles point. Maria Brito and Marie Scriba also won their doubles match-up with an 8-6 come-from-behind victory over Natalie Frazier and Kelley Hyndman at flight three. The Clemson team trailed 6-3 in the match before reeling off five straight games to clinch the doubles point for the Tigers. In the flight two contest, Daniela Alvarez and Alexandra Luc fell to the Bulldogs’ 14th-ranked tandem of Darya Ivanov and Evgenia Subbotina, 8-0.

In singles play, Brito defeated Subbotina in the flight three match 6-2,6-2 to make it 2-0 Tigers. Then at number two, Alvarez upset 45th-ranked Robinson 6-3,6-3 for a 3-0 advantage. Salge clinched the win for the Tigers with a 6-3,6-4 victory over Basu at number four.

Georgia picked up its first point from #30 Frazier at number one. After splitting sets with van Adrichem, a match tiebreaker was played in lieu of a third set. Frazier won it 10-4 to secure the point. The Bulldogs then won a couple more match tiebreakers to make it 4-3 final. Ivanov defeated Luc 7-6(3),5-7,1-0 (10-6) at number five while Hyndman beat Kathryn Gerber 1-6,6-0,1-0 (10-7).

The Tigers will have a week-long layoff before opening their ACC schedule against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Wednesday, Mar. 1 in Atlanta, GA.
