Clemson Swimming and Diving Faces Tough Task In Charlottesville

Oct. 27, 2006

Clemson, SC- The Clemson Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving teams will travel to Charlottesville, VA for a two day meet on Friday and Saturday this weekend. The Lady Tigers will have their work cut out for them as they will face off against #18 Penn State, #21 Virginia, and unranked Virginia Tech. Sophomore Michelle Parkhurst will lead 2-1 Clemson into the meet as she tries to keep her undefeated streak going in both the 100 and 200 backstroke events. The men’s team will have a similar challenge as they face defending ACC Champion and #16 Virginia, Penn State and Virginia Tech. The men rebounded from an early season loss at Florida State to even their record at 1-1 after a win vs. Georgia Tech in Atlanta.

The Lady Tigers have had some success against their tough opponents this weekend. They are 11-0 vs. the Hokies, 12-15 against Virginia, and 0-1 against Penn State. Last season, Clemson dropped a close meet to then #14 Virginia 125-118 at home. Clemson has beaten Virginia Tech 11 times from 1985-2004, the last two wins coming on the road.

The men will need stellar performances from top to bottom if they hope to win their meets this weekend. They have dominated Virginia Tech all-time, winning 10 of 11 meets against the Hokies. However, the Tigers are only 12-26-1 against Virginia and 0-1 against Penn State. The last win for Clemson against Virginia came at home in the season opener during the 1999-2000 season.

The meet time is set for 6:00 pm on Friday, and will continue at 9 am on Saturday.
