Clemson Signs Four Golfers

Nov. 16, 2011

CLEMSON, SC – Clemson Head Coach Larry Penley announced Wednesday the signing of four student-athletes to National Letters of Intent for the 2012-13 academic year. Penley has added Miller Capps of Denver, NC; Cody Proveaux of Leesville, SC; Blake Kennedy of Moore, SC and Parker Mills of Easley, SC.

Proveaux was named the AJGA National Player of the Year this year after he had outstanding performances in major junior tournaments. Proveaux won the Junior PGA Championship in August when he made a 15-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole at the Sycamore Hills Golf Club in Fort Wayne, IN.

He also had four runner-up finishes in AJGA Invitational events (HP Boys Championship at Carlton Woods, FootJoy Invitational, Rolex Tournament of Champions, Bobby Chapman).

The Pelion High School product is ranked fourth in the world among junior amateurs by Golfweek and was named a first-team Rolex All-American. He was joined on that team by current Clemson freshman Billy Kennerly. Proveaux has won the 2A State Championship each of the last two years and has led his Pelion High School team to the state title as well.

Proveaux attends the same high school as Clemson football player Dalton Freeman and the two were on the same Pelion High golf team during Freeman’s senior year of high school in the spring of 2007.

Proveaux’s trophy shelf also includes hardware from the 2010 Polo Golf Junior Classic, which helped him earn second-team Rolex Junior All-American honors in 2010.

Kennedy has won the state Region II-4A Championship each of the last three years and will be looking for a fourth straight title this spring. He finished in the top 10 of the state tournament each of the last two years. He was named the Herald-Journal Boys Golfer of the Year in 2011.

This past summer he won the Junior Azalea thanks to a round of 62. He finished off the summer by qualifying to the US Amateur with a 141 score at a qualifier at St. John’s Creek, GA.

Capps comes to Clemson from North Lincoln High School in Denver, NC. He is a three-time all-state and all-conference team member and has already played on two state championship teams in North Carolina.

Capps was the state runner up at the 2009 state championship and won the regional title individually that year. Currently ranked as the number-one player in the Tar Heel Youth Golf Association, he qualified for the 2011 US Junior Amateur. He is ranked 20th in the US in the class of 2012 by the National Junior Golf Scoreboard. He made the cut at the North Carolina Amateur and the North Carolina Open this past summer.

Mills is the brother of Clemson junior Corbin Mills, who won the US Public Links Championship this past summer. Parker has been a Region 4A All-Conference selection each of the last two years. The senior at Wren High School finished third at the Jimmy Self Invitational and fourth at the Blade Junior Invitational this past summer.
