Clemson Set to Host Indiana In Regular Season Home Opener Sunday

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson women’s soccer team is set to host Indiana for the regular season home opener on Sunday, Aug. 26 at 1 p.m. at Historic Riggs Field.

Clemson Notes:

  • On Thursday, Aug. 23 the Tigers traveled to Columbia to face in-state rival South Carolina, where they suffered a 1-0 loss in the first match-up of the 2018-19 Palmetto Series.
  • Clemson opened the season with a 1-0 victory over Oregon State in Corvallis, Ore. on Friday, Aug. 17 and dropped a 1-0 decision at Oregon on Sunday, Aug. 19.
  • Redshirt senior Miranda Weslake scored the first goal of the 2018 season for the Tigers in the 89th minute against Oregon State.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Maddie Weber made her first collegiate start, and also picked up her first career save and first career shutout.
  • With the win, Clemson improved to 23-1-1 (.920) in season-opening matches, dating back to the program’s inaugural season in 1994.
  • The Tigers return nine starters from the 2017 squad, including senior defender Sam Staab and sophomore forward Mariana Speckmaier, who each earned All-ACC honors a season ago.
  • Head coach Eddie Radwanski is entering his eighth season at the helm of the Clemson program. In 2016, Radwanski was named ACC Coach of the Year after leading his squad to an ACC regular season title.
  • Starting keeper Sandy MacIver has yet to join the Tigers this season, as she has been competing with England’s National Team in the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in France. The Young Lionesses made history on Friday, Aug. 24 as they claimed the bronze medal with a win in penalties (4-2) over France, giving England its best-ever finish at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup.
  • MacIver was awarded with the Adidas Golden Glove award for her outstanding performance in goal at the World Cup. She started all six matches for England and compiled 38 saves.
  • Staab was the only collegiate player called up to the U.S. U-23 Women’s National Team for the 2018 Nordic Tournament that takes place from Aug. 29-Sept. 3. The San Diego native and the rest of the U.S. squad will take on Norway, Sweden and England.

Indiana Notes:

  • The Hoosiers kicked off the 2018 season with a 3-0 home victory over Miami (OH) on Aug. 19 and are coming off a 2-2 double overtime draw at Georgia on Friday, Aug. 24.
  • Senior Abby Allen is leading Indiana statistically with two goals and two assists, good for six points.
  • Three Hoosiers earned Big Ten Preseason honors, Mykayla Brown, Chandra Davidson and Maya Piper.

Series Notes:

  • Clemson has a 1-0-0 advantage in the series against Indiana with the first meeting between the two teams taking place last season.
  • The Tigers opened the 2017 campaign at the Hoosier Challenge Cup in Bloomington, Ind. Last season. Defeating SIUE 4-0 in the season opener and Indiana 1-0.
