April 11, 2009

Charlottesville, Va. – The Clemson rowing team had a successful showing at the Virginia Invitational on Saturday morning on Lake Monticello. Nine out of 10 Tiger crews were victorious, including wins in all four races against both Tennessee and Central Florida.

Clemson’s Varsity 8+ posted a strong performance, defeating #19 Tennessee and Central Florida. The Tigers posted a time of 6:33.5 against the Volunteers, who were NCAA Championship participants last season.

The Tiger’s Varsity 4+, Second Varsity 4+, and Second Varsity 8+ also swept Central Florida and Tennessee.

In a race against Virginia, Clemson’s Second Novice 8+ came out on top with a time of 7:06.7.

Clemson’s only loss of the day came in the Novice 8+ race, with Virginia winning in a time of 6:54.5.

“We learned a great deal this week, specifically in our ability to make adjustments and remain consistent,” said Clemson Head Coach Richard Ruggieri. “To perform well at the ACC Championship we need to be aggressive and execute what we are capable of doing. The competition will be excellent and we will attempt to be our very best.”

Clemson heads to the ACC Championships in Oak Ridge, Tenn. next Monday, April 20. The Tigers look to win their first ever conference championship after a second place finish last season.
