Clemson Rowing to Compete in the South Region Championships

May 16, 2002

Clemson, SC – The Tiger rowing team will travel to Oak Ridge, TN, on May 18-19 to compete in the 2002 Lexus South-Central Sprints. Eighteen teams, including many of the top-ranked programs in the nation, will compete on the 2000m course sponsored by the Oak Ridge Rowing Association for a bid to the National Championships May 31-June 2 on the Eagle Creek Reservoir in Indianapolis, IN. The South and Central regions are holding a combined regional championship again this year to allow for stronger and deeper fields in each event.

Last year the Tigers claimed the South Region title as three Clemson boats posted championships in the 2001 Lexus South/Central Sprints held on Melton Hill Lake. The Tigers’ second varsity 8+, varsity 4+ and second varsity 4+ boats claimed titles.

Racing will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday with the first novice 8+ race followed by the second varsity 4+, first varsity 4+, second varsity 8+ and first varsity 8+. The regatta will break for lunch and then resume at 2:00 p.m. with the semifinals and repechages races. The schedule of races will remain the same as the morning heats’ schedule. The top finishers of the semifinals and repechages competition will advance to the grand finals on Sunday.
