Clemson Rowing Records Strong Performance at San Diego Crew Classic

SAN DIEGO, CA – The Clemson rowing team recorded a strong performance over two days in the San Diego Crew Classic in San Diego, CA. The 1st and 2nd Varsity 8, Varsity 4 each advanced to the Petite Final in their races after performances on Saturday.

The Varsity 8 finished fourth in their heat Saturday morning, advancing to the Women’s Collegiate Varsity Invitational Petite Final. The Tigers took first in the final, defeating Washington State, Texas, Tennessee, Alabama, and Purdue.

“Our 1st Varsity 8 had a great race today,” said Clemson Head Coach Robbie Tenenbaum. “They went out in challenging conditions and asserted themselves early. They got a lead and kept pushing the entire race. This was a great win over some strong teams.”

Clemson’s 2nd Varsity 8 had the best heat finish on Saturday, finishing third, and advanced to the Women’s 2V Petite Final. The Tigers then finished fourth, behind Washington State, Texas and Oklahoma.

Clemson’s Varsity 4 finished fourth in their heat on Saturday, and advanced to the Women’s 4+ Petite Final. The Tigers then finished third with a time of 8:23.41.

Clemson’s Novice 8 participated in the third heat of the Laurel V. Korholz Perpetual Trophy race on Saturday and finished fifth with a time of 7:13.19.

“The competition level in this regatta was very high,” said Tenenbaum. “After a weekend of racing out here, we know we can race with the top teams in the country.”

“We’re off next weekend, but we’re going to start preparing for the next regatta at Lake Monticello, VA on April 14.”
