Clemson Rowing Complete Day Two of Competition in San Diego

April 4, 2004

The Clemson rowing team finished the second day of events at the San Diego Crew Classic on Mission Bay. The Tigers return home with a fourth place finish in the grand finals of the Women’s Cal Cup. The crews rowing in the Women’s Collegiate Novice as well as in the petite finals of the Women’s JV returned fifth place finishes. The Tigers faced top competition from around the nation in this annual west coast regatta.

The Novice 8+ rowing in the Women’s Collegiate Novice grand final began the race with a solid start holding third by 1000 meters. From that point on it was a seat for seat dogfight to the finish with the Tigers taking fifth in 7:23.65. The University of Washington won the race with a time of 7:05.30.

Also competing in the grand finals of their race was the Varsity 8+. They also took fourth in the Women’s Cal Cup. Despite rowing in the outside lanes which were not protected from the wind, the Tigers had a strong showing and pulled a 7:22.89 finishing time. Loyola Marymount finished with a 7:12.70 winning time.

Clemson rowing’s Second Varsity 8+ competed in the Women’s JV petite finals. Rowing in the same conditions as the Varsity 8+, the crew placed fifth with a time 7:22.20. Texas placed first in 7:05.30.

“We had strong races,” said head coach Susie Lueck. “We showed good improvement from the heats and now we have two weeks to go home and find some more speed before ACC’s”

The Tigers will return to the water on Saturday, April 17 when they host the ACC Championships on Lake Hartwell.
