Clemson Rowing Competes in Tail of the Tiger

Oct. 1, 2005

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson rowing team kicked off its fall season on Saturday as the Tigers played host to the Tail of the Tiger regatta on Lake Hartwell. Clemson won each of the events it entered, defeating boats from the University of Georgia and the Clemson University Rowing Association.

“What a perfect morning for a regatta in Clemson,” said Susie Lueck, head rowing coach. “The cloud-cover brought cooler temperatures with only a light breeze on Lake Hartwell. There was a solid Clemson fan turnout sporting their orange gear watching the Tigers sweep the competition.”

Clemson won both the novice 8+ and novice 4+ events handily. In the 8+ race, Clemson’s two boats swept the first two positions easily over the Clemson club team. The A boat finished with a time of 21:07, 27 seconds ahead of the B boat for the Tigers. In the 4+ race, Clemson finished in the top three positions. The winning boat was the A boat in a time of 22:13.0, finishing 15 seconds ahead of the Tigers’ B boat and 28 ahead of the C boat from Clemson.

“I was pleased with the way the novice handled themselves today,” Lueck said. “They were very focused on their racing and went out and had a solid performance, pushing each other down the course. The competition they gave each other was impressive.”

Clemson won the varsity 8+ race over both Georgia and the club team, with the B boat completing the course in a time of 19:38.0. The Tiger A and B boats finished 42 seconds apart, but well ahead of the other boats. The varsity then split into three 4+ boats and raced two crews from Georgia and one from the club team. The Tigers once again swept the top positions.

“The varsity had a great workout this morning as we kicked off our fall race season,” Lueck said. “Many of the varsity raced three times over the 3mile course which provided great competition. The fans were spectacular. It was awesome to have that many fans at our first race of the year. I appreciate their support.”

The Tiger rowers return to action on Saturday, October 8 to take part in the Chattanooga Head Race in Tennessee. Clemson will return to Lake Hartwell in two weeks for the annual Clemson Class Day event.
